Page Rank Sculpting, a highly debated topic across SEO community, is a technique used to diffuse the link juice of the website to its internal and only important pages for higher search results. The concept, attained hype in 2007 when the no-follow attributed was misconceived to conserve and control the amount of PageRank which flows internally in your website.

Then and now

How did the link juice flow then?

Suppose if your webpage has a PageRank of 6 and you have 12 navigational links on that page. Then, according to the-then Google’s Algorithmic calculation, every page would have earned a PageRank of .5

i.e. PageRank of the Page = 6/12 = .5

No of links on that page

So the amount of link juice which passes on to the 12 inks is .5

And if you happen to put a no-follow tag on 6 of your links which you think does not need any link juice for e.g. Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions, Shopping Cart, Login etc, then the calculation of the PageRank flow would have happened like this:

i.e. PageRank of the Page = 6/6 = 1

No of links on that page

Now the amount of link juice which passes on to the 6 links is 1

How did the link juice flow now?

The monopoly behind allotting a PageRank to a particular webpage solely belongs to Google and other search engines in the cyber space. A no-follow attribute would not see what the Google’s 200 factored Algorithm would. Hence not so long after, Google via his favorite messenger Matt Cutts came with its rectified calculation of the Link Juice flow.

According to this mended version, the no-followed links would not receive any link juice but they would still be considered in the denominator for the sake of calculation.

i.e. PageRank of the Page = 6/12 = .5

No of links on that page

Now the same link juice would flow as we had calculated earlier but now the link juice would only pass to 6 links which are not no-followed.

Now the amount of link juice which passes on to the 6 links is .5

Conclusion

Since in this way we are only losing the link juice which we could have passed on the pages, it’s wise not to use the no-follow tag on to your internal pages. The only thing we can possibly do is to select carefully, the number of links you have on a particular page, because inevitably you have to share your PageRank with the link, with or without no-follow.
