Domain authority is created by Moz and according to the definition they give,
“Domain Authority represents Moz’s best prediction for how a website will perform in search engine rankings. “
Simple defined, Domain Authority tells the ability of a website to rank well on a search engine. Unlike Page Authority which would only tell the authority of a particular page, domain authority takes into account all factors which are capable of affecting the authority of the whole website. Hence domain authority is a great metric to see your websites progress on a search engine result page over a period of time.
Is Domain Authority (DA) an important metric to consider?
Well, Domain Authority is one of the most important metrics search engines, like Google, use to rank your website. This metric is used to see how popular you are amongst your competitors and how well are you linked across your niche market. This helps search engines to have a better idea about your importance in the industry and hence will push your website up the search results.
How is Domain Authority calculated?
Domain Authority is calculated on a 100-point, logarithmic scale.
According to MOZ, they takes into consideration more than 40 signals in order to calculate a Domain Authority which generally includes linking root domains, total number of links, MozRank, Moztrust and etc.
Since that doesn’t give us much insight on how it is calculated, allow me to pen down some signals which contribute largely on the calculation of the domain Authority.
1. Domain Age:
Google always considers the Domain age while ranking a particular page for a keyword.
The more the age, the better its chance for ranking, provided it has some useful content people are linking to.
The notion behind this is to stop spammers who want to rank well on the first day, just to get the top spot by providing nothing useful or informative whatsoever. This is the reason why Google introduced the filter named ‘Sandbox’ in their algorithm.
Consistent traffic on the domain over a period of time tells Google that the owner is serious about his business and is consistently providing useful data to the browsers all over the globe.
No surprises, popularity is the main foundation for any search engine algorithm.
“Popularity can be defined as the number of backlinks you have on your website from different high PR domains in the same market niche.”
The more sites links to you, the more popular you become, and the more relevant sites that links to you, the better.
3. Content or Size.
Its familiar notion. Content is King. Great content is the backbone of every successful website. Take CNN, take MSN, take ABC, the only way they are able to rank at the top the ladder is way by publishing unique content consistently. Content is the sole way you can connect with other and others can connect with you. Write content which is unique, informative, relevant and interesting. Having done that the only thing you need to know is how to Promote Content to get traffic and backlinks
If Domain Authority is so Important, How can I increase it?
Well, if you suddenly want to increase your page authority over night? It’s not possible. Ranking for a particular set of keywords is time consuming thing. In this matter patience is a nice virtue. If you do the following practices consistently and efficiently you would sure likely to rank higher in the search results sooner.
Write fresh and link-able content.
Content is king. Yes, but that doesn’t signify much. Content on your website should have some value. Content alone would be incompetent unless it has some value attached to it. If you write something, write it as a problem solving solution and not as a block of content with stuffed keywords. A content should be very detailed, useful, interesting and relevant. Follow this and I’m sure links would follow too.
Create worthy Backlinks
It’s wisely said, that only few links from a reputed and a relevant source are much better than hundreds of them from irrelevant spam websites. You have the mantra with you. Go! How?
Well there are so many reputed sources you can take links from:
- Directory Listing ( Google, Yahoo, DMoz)
- Guest Posting
- Blog Submission
- Article Submission and more
It’s great to have a social media icons on your webpage for information to be easily shared across the web. The more the page is shared across the social media platforms, the better would it perform in the search results.
Optimize Meta tags
Always optimize your keywords in the Meta tags, make them bold and italics at some places so that the search engine knows what exactly you are talking about. Do not try to target a single webpage for many keywords. Preferably target a single webpage for only 2-3 relevant keywords. Include them in the Headings tag, description tag and in the URL as well.
Optimize anchor texts
Make sure that your keywords are in anchor texts. Also if you are getting a backlink from a reputed resource make sure that the backlink comes from an anchor tag of your keyword.
